The role of Pest and Buda in the revolution<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBudapest did not officially exist at this time. Pest and Buda stood on the two banks of the Danube as twin cities. Even then, for nearly a century, the goal had been to turn Pest and Buda into a governmental and cultural centre,\u201d said historian Csaba Domonkos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council of Lieutenancy, the University, the National Museum founded by Ferenc Sz\u00e9ch\u00e9nyi, and later the Hungarian Academy of Sciences were all located in Pest. It is no coincidence, then, that \u201cwhat happened in Pest had an impact on the entire country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to contemporary accounts, an exceptionally large number of people took part in the events. Csaba Domonkos described it this way:\n\u201cThis did not look like a traditional revolution where a raging crowd marches through the streets and fighting breaks out. Here, people went out, listened to the speeches, then went home for lunch, later returned for more speeches, and eventually set out to free Mih\u00e1ly T\u00e1ncsics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
